Manhunt Review: The Veteran Gay Hookup Site

Manhunt is one of the original online cruising sites for men who have sex with men, predating the location-based apps by years, and it is still running with a loyal, mostly older membership. It is direct, unpretentious and adequately maintained, but it has been overtaken in reach and polish by Grindr and its successors.

What it is and who it's for

Manhunt launched at the start of the century as a web-based hookup site for gay and bisexual men, and for a long stretch it was the dominant place to cruise online in the United States and parts of Europe. The arrival of smartphone apps with live location changed the market, and Manhunt responded with its own app and a modernised site, but its centre of gravity never fully moved. Today it is best described as a site-first service with an app attached, serving men who have used it for years, men who prefer a desktop and a detailed profile to a grid of torsos, and men in the thirty-five-plus range who find the big apps exhausting.

The purpose is sex, stated plainly. Profiles describe what you want and how you want it, and nobody pretends otherwise. Men seeking relationships or friendships do use it, but they are a minority and the culture does not cater to them. If you want dating with romance attached, a general app with a strong gay user base will serve you better.

How it works

Profiles are more detailed than on the location apps, with structured fields for stats, preferences, position, safer-sex practices, HIV status and what you are into, plus a free-text section and public and private photo albums. Browsing is by grid and by search, with a solid filter set that lets you narrow by location, attributes and what someone is looking for right now. The site shows who is online, which matters for a service whose whole point is immediacy.

Interaction is direct. You can message anyone, unlock your private photos for them, add favourites, and use quick signals to indicate interest without writing. The app adds location-based sorting and push notifications, bringing it closer to the Grindr model, though it remains less slick. There is a history of the site hosting events and city-specific features, and some regional communities, particularly in the north-eastern United States and parts of Latin America, remain active enough that the site is still a genuine option there. Elsewhere, activity can be sparse, and you may find the same handful of profiles online night after night.

Pricing model

Manhunt is a freemium service. Free accounts can create a profile, browse and send a limited number of messages or unlocks, with restrictions on how many profiles you can see and how much of the search you can use. The paid tier is a subscription sold by the month, with cheaper rates for longer terms, and it removes the limits, unlocks full search and filters, allows unlimited private-album sharing and adds extras such as seeing who viewed you and browsing invisibly. Pricing is in the normal range for gay hookup services and comparable with the premium tiers of the big apps.

The free tier is restrictive enough that regular users end up paying, and that is the intended design. Whether it is worth it depends entirely on local activity: in a city where Manhunt still has a crowd, a month's subscription is reasonable; in a quiet region, no subscription will conjure people who are not there. Try the free version in your area before committing, and watch the automatic renewal.

Safety and privacy

Hookup services bring specific risks and Manhunt is candid about them. The first is personal safety when meeting: arrange a first meeting in a public place or at least exchange a video call, tell a friend where you are going, keep your own transport, and trust a bad feeling. Robberies and assaults targeting men met through cruising sites happen, and in countries where homosexuality is criminalised or socially dangerous, the risk includes entrapment; use the service with extreme care or not at all in those places.

The second is privacy of photos. Private albums are only as private as the person you unlock them for, and screenshots cannot be prevented. Keep face photos and identifying tattoos or backgrounds out of anything you would not want circulated. The service has had a data-security incident in the past, so assume that your profile data and messages could leak and write accordingly. Sexual-health information is sensitive; sharing status openly is normal on the site, but consider what it means if it is ever exposed. Finally, the usual scam patterns appear, including profiles that quickly push you to an external app and then ask for money or payment to verify your age. Legitimate members never do that.

Pros and cons

Verdict

Manhunt is a survivor rather than a leader. If you are in one of its remaining strongholds, prefer a thorough profile to a thumbnail, or simply want an alternative to the big location apps, it is still a legitimate choice and the subscription is fairly priced. If you are anywhere else, the pool is likely to be too small to justify paying. Whichever you choose, apply the safety basics without exception, because the stakes on a hookup site are higher than on a dating app.
